The Goal: Playing Hammer-Ons

The way we connect our notes on the guitar is called “articulation.” We have a few different choices and one of those choices is called a Hammer-On.

The Hammer-On is played by following these steps:

  • Press the string down with the left-hand finger.
  • Pick the string with the right hand.
  • Maintain pressure as you quickly press down onto the fret of the second (higher) note on the same string. The harder you strike the second note, the louder and longer tone you will achieve.
  • Keep in mind that the second note is not picked.
