Sight Reading

Piano - Simple C Chord

Lesson

The Goal: Sight Reading Fluently

What is sight reading?

In music, sight reading is the ability to immediately play on any instrument the notes that are written on a musical score.

Why is it important?

We forget that there was a time in our childhood that we did not know how to speak or write our native tongue. I can read, write and speak both English and Spanish yet if you show me a Japanese newspaper, I cannot understand a thing. So it is with the language of music. You must learn to speak, write, play and hear this new language as if learning any other language.

The good news is that it can be done and it is one of the most wonderful things to experience since you will be fluent in a language spoken by virtually every culture in the world. When you learn the language of music, doors open up that would otherwise be closed to a non-musician.

The not so good news is that there are no shortcuts to learning this new language. I am a huge sight reading advocate in a time where few encourage it. This is tragic because the language of music has been around for hundreds of years and will be around for hundreds to follow. You will be in good company when learning how to sight read such as Beethoven, Stravinski, John Williams, Miles Davis and Mozart.

How do I get better at it ?

I cannot stress enough how important and valuable sight reading is and the only way to get better at it is to do it as often as possible. Read and play any and all music you can get your hands on.

Okay, I’m in…where do I get music to read ?

Below are some resources for free downloads online as well as reputable sheet music companies. Also valuable is to purchase full song books and collections online as well. Check Amazon for good prices.
