Each Piano Journey is Unique
If there is one thing that I love, it’s hearing a pianist’s story. Everyone’s path towards a lifetime of playing the piano is different and unique. How did they start? Why did they start playing? Who influenced them? What direction did their musical journey take?
In this series, I will interview piano players from all walks of life and delve into what turned them onto the amazing instrument that is the piano.
We’ll explore different philosophies, approaches and methods to learning the piano. You would be surprised at how interesting everyone’s story is. I love sitting over a cup of coffee chatting about music.
My Story in a Nutshell
I actually wasn’t even aware of the piano throughout my entire childhood. Although we had a piano in the house and my sister took lessons, it was just a piece of furniture to me growing up. It never stood out as something that I would care about. Who would have thought it would change my life the way it did?
Fast forward a few years to high school and I had the option of taking a painting class or a piano class. I had already tried painting and it was really not my thing so I though, “piano, why not?” After my first piano class, I was hooked. I’ve never looked back. Music was my obsession.
After a few years, I was practicing 5 hours a day and got accepted to the music program in Hunter College in NYC. I was ecstatic. This is why I constantly remind people that it’s never too late to start.
That one piano class literally changed my life in so many ways. Not only did it bring the wonderful world of music into my life but it also changed my career choice and brought me to where I am today.
