Best Kept Secret to Great Piano Playing

How much do you play every day?

It amazes me how many piano players find it difficult to get past a certain plateau in their playing. We are living in a time that all kinds of promises, magic pills and tricks are talked about in order to achieve everything from great wealth, weight loss and even great musical skills. The truth is that like all valuable skills and achievements in life, there are no true shortcuts but there definitely are smarter paths that we can take.

One of the best kept secrets that most musicians don’t adhere to is simply this: Play as much as you can!

Sounds simple enough right? Yet it is mind boggling how many musicians I meet that when I ask them how much they play every day, they give me a confused answer of something like, “Well, umm, you see, my schedule is crazy lately so I don’t really have too much time to play.” The equation is rather simple: No Playing = No Progress = Plateau

If you feel you are not progressing in your playing as much as you would like to be, I urge you to ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I playing every day?
  • Do I make time in my schedule, even if it’s just a few minutes?
  • Am I practicing pieces/songs that I enjoy?

The simple fact is, if you want to get better, you have to play more. The more you play, the better you get. Maybe it’s time to challenge yourself with a new piece or a new song. Print some chord charts for your favorite songs and sing along. Go to our Sheet Music section and print out a few new pieces by your favorite composers. Looking for more music? Shoot us a message and let us know what you are looking for, we will help you find it! No excuses. Our goal is to be great piano players and enjoy the pleasure of playing.

Happy playing!
