The Goal: Playing A-Type Barre Chords

The open A minor chord can also be used as a barre chord shape. This shape will have it’s root on the 5th string.

Some A-Type barre chord tips:

  • Play an open A minor chord, but use your 2,3 and 4th fingers.
  • Slide this shape up one fret and add your 1st finger across the first fret, forming a barre.
  • You are now playing a Bb minor chord on the first fret. Each fret you move up, the chord moves up by half step.
